It was only a matter of time before the two stars faced off for a part since they're close to the same age and have both become in-demand actresses due to their big movie franchises. In fact, the tabloids have already tried to start a feud between The Hunger Games actress and the Twilight star.
While Kristen and Jennifer might not actually be going at each other's throats, they are facing off in a battle for the role of Peyton Loftis in t
In the 1951 book that the movie will be based on, Peyton is a girl who grows up in a very dysfunctional family—her mother despises her, doting on her disabled sister instead, and her alcoholic father admires her just a little too much. In fact, the book seems to imply that beautiful, spoiled Peyton and her father are involved in an incestuous relationship. The troubled girl's fate is revealed at the beginning of the book when she commits suicide.
Playing such a tragic character would be a great way for Kristen Stewart or Jennifer Lawrence to show the world their full potential, and it's not hard to see why they think that the film adaptation of Lie Down in Darkness could be their ticket to Oscar gold—author William Styron also wrote Sophie's Choice, and the movie adaptation of that novel helped Meryl Streep win her first Best Actress Oscar.
However, Jennifer might have a slight edge here since has already earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in Winter's Bone. Here's what she said about wanting to play Peyton:
I
am obsessed with that part. I have this feeling of protectiveness over
characters I want to play . . . If someone else gets the part, I'm
afraid they won't do it right. I'm trying to write the director . . . to
convince him that I should be in his movie. I'll chase him if I have
to. I'll sit outside his house.
So while these actresses
aren't taking digs at each other in the press, the way that they're
pouring their hearts out to the public seems to signify that they are
both very aware that they are competing for the part. It kind of seems
like they're engaging in a war of words to see who can prove that
they're most passionate about wanting to play Peyton.
